Supporting Families When a Parent Uses Medical Cannabis is a national-scope training course for child welfare workers, caseworkers, supervisors, and agency staff who encounter families where a parent or caregiver participates in a state medical cannabis program.

This course provides practical, safety-focused guidance on medical cannabis product types and their risks, child exposure and accidental ingestion prevention, home-visit awareness, family communication using neutral harm-reduction language, impairment considerations, safe storage planning, and emergency response.

The course is grounded in child safety β€” not stigma. Lawful medical cannabis participation by a parent does not automatically constitute maltreatment. This training helps child welfare staff distinguish between program participation and genuine household safety concerns, and respond to both with competence and professionalism.

Because cannabis laws vary significantly by state, this course addresses national principles. State-specific inserts are provided for PA, OH, and WV where jurisdiction-specific context is relevant.

Disclaimer: This course is intended for educational and harm-reduction purposes only. It is not legal advice, medical advice, or a substitute for agency policy, clinical judgment, or case-specific legal review. Because cannabis laws vary by state, staff should follow their agency policy and applicable state law in individual cases.
